Happy Birthday Jane Doe!

This week we celebrate the birthday of Jane Doe by Converge. This record not only changed the world around me, but permanently rewired how I think, feel, & create. There are albums that define eras, & then there are albums that become part of who you are. Jane Doe has always been the latter for me.
Years ago, I was one of the lucky few to get my hands on one of the extremely limited Jane Doe Project paintings by Jake Bannon. That piece of art has been with me through everything. It even survived the house fire that nearly took everything we owned. That painting, much like the album itself, has been a constant reminder of resilience, beauty in chaos, & the power of art to transcend disaster.
Many, many years ago when my wife & I were working at Hot Topic, I tortured everyone, customers included, by playing Jane Doe nonstop. One of the coolest moments I will never forget was when Ben Koller’s mom came into the store while it was blasting. She smiled & said, “That’s my son.” If I remember correctly, she told us she had just been listening to it on a flight & that she loved it. So cool.
If you told that dickhead kid blasting Converge at Hot Topic that someday he & Ben would start a clothing line together with Koller Cvlt, or that he & Jake would collaborate on an art piece to raise money for animals, his friggin head would have exploded on the spot.
I often joke that Jane Doe is one of the most important women in my life, but it is the truth. She has been with me through every high & every low over the last 20+ years, always looming in the background like a ghost who probably knows me better than I know myself.
To now have Terrier Cvlt products available through Deathwish feels like a full circle moment. The people that gave us Jane Doe are some of the same people that believed in carrying my work, & for that I will forever be grateful. Dream come true does not even begin to cover it.
So here is to Jane Doe, to Converge, to Jake Bannon, & to every soul that has ever felt cracked open by this record. Happy birthday to one of the greatest works of art ever made.
